Fusing the knowledge of east and west

Marie-Amelie yoga collaboration for psoriasis treatment

An introduction to Marie-Amélie de Potter and the MindBoost programme

Yoga, martial arts and human resources – the unique blend to beat stress
For over two decades, Marie-Amélie de Potter has dedicated her professional career to helping professionals suffering from stress. A native of Ghent, Belgium, Marie-Amélie de Potter has always been fascinated by yoga and eastern martial arts. After reading Japanese studies at Leuven University, she travelled to Japan in the late 1980s to learn from the masters.
Marie-Amélie spent the next three years immersed in Japanese culture. She returned to Europe in 1992 to work as an expert in Japanese culture. She compared her experience of yoga and martial arts to modern medical techniques and saw how they complemented each other. She became more and more convinced that these insights could play a unique role in helping European professionals stay on top of the pressures of work. So she entered the field of human resources, working extensively as a trainer and coach specializing in stress management and burnout prevention.

Using her skills to help people with skin conditions
In 2006 Marie-Amélie became involved in a PhD project at the University of Ghent researching to what extent alternative techniques can help people living with a skin condition. She put together a yoga course, which she taught to people with a skin condition over the project’s five-year period. The yoga course was consistently voted as the most life changing and impactful part of the program, which was extended and still runs today.
Her work at Ghent University gave scientific proof that her ideas could help people with stress-related skin conditions. “I saw that the time was right for using eastern philosophy and yoga techniques to tackle stress and all its attendant problems”, Marie-Amélie explains.

Developing the MindBoost programme
LEO Pharma also recognised this as an opportunity and had begun searching for the perfect partner to develop a unique anti-stress programme for psoriasis sufferers. They found Marie-Amélie and the Leo Pharma MINDBOOST programme is the result of this collaboration. It is a unique blend of LEO Pharma’s deep patient understanding and scientific expertise, and Marie-Amélie’s experience with coaching and yoga techniques. From her coaching background Marie-Amélie has used the theories behind the Enneagram personality types as inspiration to develop the three focus areas of the MindBoost programme: Confidence; Mood; Focus. People are different and have different ways to cope with challenges, and the exercises in each of these three categories addresses different coping strategies. By taking the test the users can get an indication of where best to start. However, all the exercises can be relevant and it’s all about finding out what works for you. Marie-Amélie has high hopes for the programme. “For 10 years now, I have used yoga to help stress-afflicted patients with skin conditions and I have seen it work. That’s a proven scientific fact. If you think stress affects your psoriasis, I absolutely encourage you to try MINDBOOST!”
