Psoriasis is not just a skin condition like many people think, it is actually a complex chronic condition. Psoriasis is a disease that involves  the immune system and may also be related to both our genes or to factors within our environment – this could be factors such as stress or lifestyle choices like diet. It also means that psoriasis can affect many parts of your life!

Getting an effective treatment that works for you and working with your doctor is the biggest way to help your psoriasis! But finding your triggers, finding ways to deal with any stress you are under, or knowing how to stay motivated even when you are having a bad flare up can help.

All of the above can be dealt with as part of your holistic plan to deal with your psoriasis! It’s great way to ensure you are in control of your psoriasis no matter what!


We all know that eating healthy is good for us. A healthy diet should be a standard part of your holistic psoriasis treatment program.

Food and psoriasis

Personally, I find that diet can have a major impact on my skin. If I eat very unhealthy for a few days my skin completely flares up; my acne, psoriasis the lot! It is not fun!

After having enough and feeling slightly helpless with my skin and diet, I decided to go to a nutritionist for some advice on my skin a few years ago after having constant skin problems and no idea why. I’ve had impetigo multiple times on my face and continue to have acne and psoriasis on my face (despite lots of prescription medication to help both with no luck).

After some tests and keeping a food diary, my nutritionist told me that I was dairy intolerant and would benefit from cutting out dairy. Since I have removed dairy from my diet, I have found that my skin has improved. My skin is not as dry and my acne and psoriasis flare ups are less frequent. From time to time I will still get a slight flare but they are nowhere near as bad as they used to be.

If you are like me and feel that foods can increase or decrease the symptoms of your psoriasis or other health issues that you may have, then you should speak to your doctor or a dietitian about your diet.

HOWEVER, if you are considering cutting out foods or you believe you may be intolerant to a food group ALWAYS see a dietitian first. It is incredibly unhealthy to cut out food groups instantly, so ensure you see a specialist or you could end up causing more damage to your body than doing good!

Your enviroment

The environment around you can affect your psoriasis. You might discover that your skin is distressed more during certain times of the year. It might be that cold, damp winters make your skin irritation worse and plenty of sunlight gives relief. Or, you might be like me and find that sunlight and heat make your psoriasis worse!

If winter weather makes your skin flare then ensure you are wrapped up when going out and aren’t exposing your skin to the elements! Make sure your skin is well hydrated (from the inside and out) to help fight off the colder climate!

Snow and psoriasis


Stress can be a major factor in many people’s lives and a possible trigger for psoriasis. Finding ways to deal with your stress and removing yourself from stressful situations can help. Sometimes these stresses can be caused by work or school and be a little harder to remove yourself from.

I have found exercise, and in particular yoga, as well as meditation to be great for my psoriasis and in helping me to destress. I (try to) work out three times with at least one of those sessions to help reduce stress. I also love yoga and think it so important to find something you love! If you don’t, you’ll not enjoy it, find it a chore and cause yourself even more stress – that is not what we want!

Hopefully you now have an idea of how to put together a holistic plan to help you manage your psoriasis and look after yourself as a whole.
