And in the blink of an eye, here we are in September! Can anyone tell me where this year has gone? September often reminds me of January … it’s a time for new beginnings, and for those of us who may have let those New Year resolutions slip (guilty as charged!) it is a time to wipe the slate clean and start again. It is also a really good time to take a look at your wardrobe and figure out where there may be gaps and what you need to include to ensure you have all your staples covered. So whether it’s ‘back to school’ or ‘back to work’, I have picked out some key items that will definitely see you through these early days of autumn and into the winter months.
Remembering all the ‘rules’, I have chosen pieces that will work with your psoriasis – easy to wear staples that will help you to camouflage the flakes and allow you to go about your day to day life in comfort. With this in mind, I’ve started at the bottom with a pair of Office Bramble Chelsea Boots in Leather. Chelsea Boots are now a classic boot shape, and will always work regardless of the dictates of fashion. More importantly (and I speak as one who suffered badly with psoriasis on the soles of my feet) these will not just look smart, they will also offer comfort if your feet are a problem area. Great with jeans or trousers, these are also a perfect accessory when paired with opaques, for maxi and midi dresses.
Knitwear can be a tricky proposition as many yarns will irritate the skin. I have found that a cotton and cashmere blend is easy to wear and as Uniqlo is always a great place to shop for the basics, I have picked out this Cotton Cashmere Ribbed Sweater as an option to wear with jeans. If you are one of the few who finds cashmere itchy on the skin, Uniqlo also carry a good range of cotton knitwear which shouldn’t cause any problems.
Jackets are always my favourite piece of clothing and so Autumn is always my favourite season. I am never happier than when in my uniform of skinnies, boots, blazer and scarf! The staple jacket that everyone really needs is the biker jacket and whilst there are many faux versions available on the high street, I thought I’d pick an investment piece today. In terms of ‘pound per wear’, you can’t go wrong with a style like this Biker Style Nappa Jacket from Massimo Dutti. It’s also one of the few times that you can wear black without risk of obvious flaking, as the flakes will slide off the leather.
If, however, you’d rather something a little less expensive, the utility jacket is another style that never goes out of fashion. Available in forgiving colours that will conceal the flaking from scalp psoriasis, the utility jacket is the perfect piece of outerwear for this time of year. This Utility Jacket from Next is ideal for anyone returning to college and also the perfect look for a laid back weekend vibe.
Obviously when talking about coats and jackets for the autumn season, it would be remiss not to include the trench coat. This has been hailed as a wardrobe must-have for decades and its popularity never seems to wane. Ideal colour for anyone with psoriasis and although a little pricier than the aforementioned utility jacket, this Pure Cotton Trench Coat with Stormwear from Marks and Spencer, will definitely last you for years to come.
Finally let’s move onto accessories! For some, September is all about the new stationery … is it only in our house that there is a flurry of activity around the purchase of new folders, pens and binders? For me, there is far greater pleasure in stocking up on a new scarf or two to inject some new life into old favourite coats or jackets. As I know many of you love your darker colours, I thought you’d like this Roxan Print Scarf from Mint Velvet. The fabulous snake print will update any look and is the perfect camouflage for any flaking.
Finishing with a new bag. Because why not? If the kids can have a new schoolbag then I reckon it’s only right that us adults should have a ‘treat yo’self’ moment too! I love this Ted Baker Poppey Large Leather Tote, which doubles up as a shopper/handbag or a work bag ideal for carrying files. Really smart and can be given an individual twist with the addition of a colourful twilly to the handle. Like the biker jacket above, there are also a number of faux leather totes on the high street to suit all budgets.
So there you go! All set for your return to school. Happy studying!
